South China Sea: getting one’s ducks in a row

The international court in The Hague have handed down their decision on China’s claims over large swathes of the South China Sea, and have decided against China.

The Chinese aren’t happy. Not surprising, given they have talked themselves into a corner on this issue. They aren’t backing down, and have ramped up their nationalist, anti-American rhetoric.

And now the Americans are marshalling their allies for the next stage, which I suspect will be an increased tempo of ‘freedom of navigation’ exercises in an atmosphere of heightened tension.

This crisis has been brewing for years. It now starts to get serious.
