Islamic Terrorism and Slothful Induction, example III

From Greg Sheridan’s column in the Weekend Australian, 27-28 September, 2014, ‘The civilised world is losing the war on terror’:

This week we have heard eloquent appeals to Muslims everywhere. Obama reached out to Muslim youth and said: “You come from a great tradition that stands for education, not ignorance; innovation, not destruction; the dignity of life, not murder. Those who call you away from that path are betraying this tradition, not defending it.”

Last month, Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti, Sheik Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh, made the religious view of terrorism plain. He said: “The ideas of extremism, radicalism and terrorism do not belong to Islam in any way, but are the first enemy of Islam and Muslims are their first victims, as seen in the crimes of the so-called Islamic State and al-Qa’ida.”

Abbott told the UN: “These terrorists aren’t fighting for God or religious faith. At the heart of every terrorist group is an infatuation with death. What else can explain the beheadings, crucifixions, mass executions, rapes and sexual slavery in every town and city that’s fallen to the terrorist movement that’s now entrenched in eastern Syria and northern Iraq? A terrorist movement calling itself the Islamic State insults Islam and mocks the duties of a legitimate state towards its citizens.”

So the head-loppers have nothing to do with Islam, yes? Here, have a read of self-proclaimed caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s recent Ramadan speech, and decide for yourself. For those who choose not to go to the link (and I understand perfectly why you might not want to do so), I’ll give you the first few paras:

Truly all praise belongs to Allah. We praise Him, and seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evils of our souls and from the consequences of our deeds. Whomever Allah guides can never be led astray, and whomever Allah leads astray can never be guided.

I testify that there is no god except Allah – alone without any partners – and I testify that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His slave and Messenger.

{O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims} [Āl ‘Imrān: 102].

{O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer} [An-Nisā’: 1].

{O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His messenger has certainly achieved a great triumph} [Al-Ahzāb: 70-71].

etc, etc.

The man is clearly – clearly – a pious, devout, Allah-fearing muslim who has taken the time to acquaint himself with Islamic scripture.

Just because the people quoted above – Obama, Aziz al-Sheikh, and Abbott – don’t want you to believe that al-Baghdadi and his head-lopping brethren are muslims, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t muslims, and it certainly doesn’t mean that you have to believe that they aren’t muslims.

Rather, it should make you question why these community leaders are denying such an obvious connection – one that al-Baghdadi goes to great pains to make.

Draw your own conclusions.
